An activist under the Independent Cartoonist Group (KKI) has been released by police today after spending two days in the lock-up due to his comments regarding the Sodomy II judgment.

Lawrence Jeyaraj was released at 12.45pm on police bail, his lawyer Michelle Yesudas told Malaysiakini .

He had been remanded at the Dang Wangi police station.

Meanwhile, commenting on his arrest, Lawrence said it was a waste of government resources which could have been put to better use.

"I am happy to be out but they detained me because of a Facebook posting.

"They spent so much time, effort and money to investigate such a silly thing when they can be utilising that for investigating bigger criminals," Lawrence said.

Deplorable conditions

While vowing to "keep the fight going", The Independent Cartoonist Group (KKI) member remarked on the "deplorable conditions" he endured for two nights in the lock-up.

“While the treatment from them (the police) was all right, the condition of the lock-up at Dang Wangi is bad. It is filled with mosquitoes and cockroaches.

"I can only imagine what Anwar Ibrahim has been going through for the past two weeks," he said.

He was referring to Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim who was convicted of sodomy on Feb 10 and sentenced to five years in jail.

Lawrence was arrested on Friday at his home in Cheras for sedition over online comments he made during Anwar’s case.

He was the second to be remanded for online comments on the verdict, after political cartoonist Zunar (above) who was remanded for three days.

PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan was arrested on Feb 19 for a statement he made on the verdict, but was released the next day after police failed to secure a remand order.

DAP Perak chief Nga Kor Ming is also under probe over his tweet on the verdict and will be questioned by police tomorrow.
