PAS Youth treasurer Fakhurazi Mokhtar was picked up by police today, in relation to the pro-Anwar Ibrahim Kita Lawan rally last Saturday.

Fakhrurazi's lawyer Ariff Azami Hussein told Malaysiakini that he was taken to Dang Wangi at 12.30pm to give his statement.

He was nabbed under Section 143 of the Penal Code which deals with illegal assemblies and Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act which says organisers must give 10 days notice prior to a rally.

He is the fifth person to be detained in relations to the rally, which saw about 10,000 people throng the streets of Kuala Lumpur in solidarity with Anwar and to demand Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s resignation.

Earlier today police obtained a two-day remand for PKR supreme council member Fariz Musa (left) , who was arrested under the same Sections.

PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad was released on police bail after a three-day remand yesterday, while PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli was arrested and freed on police bail last night after giving his statement.

Also arrested last week was PKR Kelana Jaya youth chief Saifullah Zulkifli.

'Fed-up with IGP'

NGO Jingga 13, led by Fariz, denounced the arrests as "politically-motivated".

"Jingga 13 also understands that more young leaders present at the Kita Lawan rally will be called up with the excuse to aid in investigations.

"This action is seen as a desperate move to intimidate and suppress the voice of the people, especially the young ones.

"This evidently is abuse of power and contempt of court,” the NGO's deputy coordinator Mikhael Iskhandaar Abdullah said in a statement today.

"The police do not have the right to stop any peaceful assembly by the people as long as it does not bring about damage to property and it does not harm public safety."

If this continues, he said, the people will become fed-up with Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar and will see him as being unable to understand the gist of the Peaceful Assembly Act.

This will only mar the integrity of the police force for the people will come to equate the police with abuse of power to benefit certain parties, he said.
