PARLIAMENT A war of words erupted in the Dewan Rakyat today after an Umno lawmaker riled members of the opposition with her statements.

Azalina Othman Said (BN-Pengerang) made several statements when debating the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s address - which incited opposition MPs and resulted in Kasthuri Patto (DAP-Batu Kawan) being ordered to leave the hall.

Among the statements Azalina made was one addressed at Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR-Lembah Pantai) ( right ), on the speech Nurul Izzah made yesterday, representing her father and Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Azalina told the PKR lawmaker that her father Anwar, who is now serving a five-year jail term for sodomy, should have behaved decently.

'We in BN pity her...'

“We in BN pity her because she is angry. But as the eldest child in the family, if she loves her father, she should have advised him not to do something that is indecent.

“Tell your father not be in politics anymore. Just stay at home and take care of his grandchildren,” Azalina shot at Nurul Izzah.

She went on to say that “desperate people do desperate acts”, in  reference to Anwar, and this inflamed a few opposition MPs resulting in a shouting match.

Many of the opposition politicians have been unhappy with the judicial proceedings in Anwar’s Sodomy II trial and some even claimed the case was politically motivated.

Azalina also told opposition lawmakers not to question the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) payments handed out by the government and to be grateful for it instead. This provoked Kasthuri ( left ) to interrupt.

“She was going on and on about BR1M and said, ‘if I was an opposition, I would not take a single sen from the government’s BR1M money’.

“So, I stood up and said. ‘BR1M is not the government’s money, it is the taxpayers’ money’,” Kasthuri told reporters after being ejected from the House.

She added it was impossible to interject Azalina when she was speaking that even the deputy speaker was reluctant to interrupt.

Deputy Speaker Ismail Mohamed Said told Kasthuri to leave the hall for interrupting Azalina and to return only after the break for lunch.
