The PAS-led Kelantan government's campaign to implement hudud in the state got a royal boost today when Kelantan's Sultan Muhammad V gave voiced his support.

The state government plans to table an amendment to the Syariah Penal Code Enactment to allow the Islamic penal code to be implemented in the state at the ongoing assembly sitting.

The move will be followed by a Private Members' Bill in Parliament, despite stern objections from Pakatan Rakyat partner DAP.

"I understand that the Kelantan government plans to table a Private Members' Bill to amend the 355 Act under Article 76A1 of the Federal Constitution, to ensure Kelantan can implement the Syariah Penal Code in Kelantan.

"May the Bill succeed with support from all parties, God willing," he was quoted by Sinar Harian Online as saying.

He said this during the royal address at the opening of the 13th state assembly sitting today.

This comes as 81 percent of Malay Muslim respondents in Peninsula Malaysia polled by independent research centre Merdeka Center said they prefer the PAS-led Kelantan government to prioritise post-flood recovery and not hudud.

Met by reporters outside the House, Deputy Menteri Besar Ahmad Amar said the sultan’s speech serves as an encouragement for the state.

"We hope to get 100 percent support from all members present," he said.
