Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has come under fire for stating that those who make comments about Islam without expert knowledge will be probed.

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli ( left ) wondered if the police chief considered himself to be the greatest Islamic scholar.

"If only qualified people can talk about religion, our knowledge of Islam would never be discussed and expanded, unless IGP thinks he is the greatest ulama (Islamic scholar) and we must all listen to him," he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

He said in Islam, there is no rule stating that only certain people are allowed to discuss the religion.

Rafizi said that if someone states something about a religion that is misguided, there are qualified people who can respond to such opinions without the police having to step in.

“I’m sure the people are not stupid. There will be people who can respond,” Rafizi said.

He said that Islam itself does not have a specific model as far as qualifying people with greater religious knowledge.

“Islam has always been based on greater depth of knowledge,” he said.
