Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has backed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar for carrying out his police work on Twitter in recent times, declaring that Khalid “is just doing his job”.

“If the IGP is not doing his job, do you know what will happen to the country? If he doesn’t do any work and stays at home, then the people will criticise, saying he is lazy,” Wan Junaidi told reporters in the Parliament lobby today.

He also defended Khalid and explained that the IGP was not selectively prosecuting those from the opposition on Twitter.

“The IGP is not one-sided. He is only one on the side of the law and is investigating cases and passing these to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC),” Wan Junaidi ( left ) said.

The Santubong MP also said Khalid was “keeping up with the times” and using Twitter to “respond immediately” to the people and to the queries and complaints.

“He is on Twitter because he has to respond immediately… actually, he has no time to be on Twitter because he has a lot of other things to do,” he added.

While technology has changed the way people interacted now, Wan Junaidi admitted, the IGP was still looking at offences from the 90s perspective, referring to the police training back then.

“A lot of things which were wrong in 1990s are still wrong in 2015, even though the situations and environments have changed.

“Officers are trained to believe (that) what was an offence in 1990 is still an offence in 2015. So the IGP is trained to do his job,” Wan Junaidi added.

Since he started tweeting, Khalid has used Twitter to instruct sedition probes against various politicians, NGO leaders and members of civil society, and this has attracted global attention .
