PAS information chief Mahfuz Omar had criticised the statement made by DAP today on party president Abdul Hadi Awang and branded it discriminatory.

“I feel it is unfair for DAP to make such a statement. How would they want to work together with PAS when the top leadership that represents PAS in Pakatan Rakyat comprises of the president, deputy president and other leaders,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

Mahfuz ( right ) added that this goes against the principles of Pakatan, where the top leadership comprises of the presidents from the respective parties.

“This is contradictory to the common principles of the Pakatan Rakyat leadership council where the parties are represented by the top leadership,” he said.

The Pokok Sena MP also urged PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali to hold a meeting among the party leadership to decide their stand on DAP’s statement.

“I hope the secretary general will organise a meeting among the PAS leaders to get a collective stand on the decision that DAP made,” Mahfuz said.

Meanwhile, when asked to comment on Tourism Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz’s ( left ) statement yesterday, Mahfuz said it was “undemocratic” for him to say those things.

“I feel it is not democratic for a minister with a law background to label those who discuss the Syariah law (hudud) as stupid people. It is weird that discussions on religious laws are not allowed,” he added.

While poking fun of Nazri’s recent doctorate from an Islamic university in Thailand, Mahfuz likened the hudud discussions to the type of discussions that are done at universities, where Syariah laws and political science issues are widely deliberated on even if the outcomes are not practical.

“If this (hudud) discussion is stupid, how about the discussions in universities by students and academicians. Even if it cannot be implemented as claimed that it was against the federal constitution, let the court decide on it,” Mahfuz said.

Nazri was reported yesterday of labelling those who discuss about hudud as “stupid people”. He also said the Islamic laws are impossible to be passed as they are against the federal constitution.
