An Umno leader has expressed support for inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar and the actions against "uncivilised" people who aim to topple Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Syed Ali Alhabshee said the police should not consider position or status when dealing with this group.

"This group disturbs the peace. I fully support the police's action to arrest them and throw them into jail," he added in a statement.

The Cheras Umno leader argued that the issue is not about Najib or Umno, but rather peace and order.

"It is regrettable how the opposition puts aside the law and engages in incitement. They break the law as if this nation belongs to them and terrorise the streets like uncivilised people," he added.

Dismissing the calls for Khalid to be expelled, Syed Ali said the police chief's stern action should be lauded.

"There are some who are pushing for Khalid to be fired, but let me remind them, the IGP has carried out his responsibilities well for the people and nation.

"Khalid cannot be sacked because of pressure from an 'uncivilised' group. This is crazy and does not make sense, we (Umno) defend Khalid as IGP," he added.

The Umno leader also claimed that the majority of Malaysians are in support of the police, and therefore Khalid should not feel concerned.

The police, he said, do not indulge in politics or take sides.         

"The police's duty is to protect and preserve peace. The majority of the people love peace and support the police in their actions against this vile opposition.

"Only a handful are causing problems, and the police should not compromise," he added.

As for the opposition, he said their agenda is to free Anwar Ibrahim from prison and to oust Najib.

However, he added that Anwar committed a crime and therefore must languish in prison.

Syed Ali said instead of accepting his situation, the opposition leader appears to be battling against the fate prescribed by Allah and inciting his followers to demonstrate.

He said the opposition has no intention of building this nation, but only crave for power and are willing to use "undemocratic channels" to seize it.

Anwar has consistently claimed that he is a victim of political conspiracy and the charge against him is fabricated, but the government has denied this.
