A government in morbid fear of cartoons

YOURSAY ‘Intimidation and harassment are signs of an imploding system.’

Zunar re-arrested after posting bail

Kim Quek: Zunar, the record nine sedition charges and re-arrest after bail has earned you a place in history as the fearless warrior who has fought for justice through exposing the evil-doings of the ruling elite.

Such frenzied acts of repression reflect utmost arrogance of power and absolute contempt for fundamental human rights and human decency.

And we only need to take a quick look at history to discern that such callous display of power is an unmistakable sign of a corrupt autocracy nearing the end of its life span.

Zunar, we appreciate the sacrifices you have made, and we will continue to support you in your continuing effort to bring real changes to the country.

Rupert16: This only shows that the government is desperately afraid of its people and is now using scare and intimidation tactics.

The people will not be cowed, and will not forget come the 14th general election (GE14).

Gunnerrun: If they are so afraid of what is portrayed in the comic strips, is it only because they are telling the truth?

Blobfishface: There is no longer any doubt. Only those who have committed extremely serious crimes would be scared of losing power.

JD Lovrenciear: This is not the Malaysia that we senior citizens grew up in. What else is next?

Anonymous_3f6d: I’m looking forward to the days when those who abused their power to harass political cartoonist Zunar will face the same treatment.

Firestone: Intimidation and harassment are signs of an imploding system/government.

Eternal Optimist: A bloody waste of police and court time and taxpayers’ money just to humour some idiot's vindictiveness. And it seems the rakyat can do nothing about this in this rudderless leaking ship of a country.

Mushiro: The police do not realise that they are humiliating themselves. The court allowed Zunar bail and they re-arrested him on a different charge after he posted the bail.

It is also an insult to the judiciary as the police are making a mockery of the justice system.

Pisasu 7: The Sedition Act was used for acts against the king in the old days, now it's used against a cartoonist who lampoons the Emperor and Empress.

1Citizen: This elected government seems to be abusing all agencies to protect the elected and their loved ones. How about doing some governing, yang berhormat (not terhormat)?

There are so many urgent national issues that need attention than petty issues.

Anon1: Cartoon characters view the cartoonist as a threat? Where else but in the land of Endless Possibilities.

Zunar claims trial to nine charges of sedition

Anonymous_3f6d: How toxic can Najib Abdul Razak's government get in wanting to send a cartoonist to jail for 43 years.

Haveagreatday: Stay the course, Zunar. Many rakyat empathise with your predicament but under a police state, we are at a loss as to what is an appropriate course of action.

Alfanso: So the rakyat must also be charged under the Sedition Act as they are abetting the accused. The government has gone crazy.

Hello: We are on the way to becoming a police state, if we have not reached there now.

NX: The motive for the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu they cannot solve, but instead they bully a cartoonist.

MP: 'GST police' must end harassment, help traders

Swipenter: "In my visits to shops in Kluang, Johor this morning, small businesses complained of hostile inspections with an intention to find fault by Customs enforcement officers," said Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong.

That is the usual attitude and mentality of enforcement officers carrying out their duties. They act like ‘tai kor’ just because of their uniforms.

Why can’t they act more like friendly ‘advisers’ teaching the small traders the ins and outs of goods and services tax (GST).

No wonder many look upon enforcement officers like they are ‘enemies’ and troublemakers instead of helpers out to make things easier for the small traders to understand the new tax system.

This is not to say that there are no unscrupulous traders out to exploit the GST to make extra profits.

Snake-in-the-Grass: Good that the traders didn't try to offer ‘duit kopi’ to the ‘extortioners’ sent from Putrajaya.

Apapunboleh: This was expected as the lowly-paid officers were also affected by the price increases. ‘Kena cari makan sikit.’

Gu: How can they honour hand-holding promise as they are going broke and need our monies desperately to pay for the lavish jet, etc, as well as fund the supplementary budget.
