By keeping silent, Najib doing disservice to himself
YOURSAY ‘He has played dumb on many other crucial occasions.’
Dr M: Cops can determine if Najib in the clear
Aries46: I suppose what former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad is implying is that as long as convicted murderer Sirul Azhar Umar's claims are not thoroughly investigated, as long as the motive remains concealed or not established and as long as the key issue of who ordered the two cops to annihilate Altantuya Shaariibuu without a trace is not identified, anyone connected with the case is a suspect.
All these questions are nothing new or some strange figment of Mahathir's mind but what Malaysians in the know have been clamouring ever since the High Court charade that convicted Azilah and Sirul.
What is mind boggling is that despite the sordid details, manoeuvres and cover-ups and the barrage of revelations by the late private eye P Balasubramaniam, businessman Deepak Jaikishan and senior lawyer Americk Sidhu in connection with the case, the inspector-general of police (IGP) claims to have no new evidence.
In fact, these issues were once again raised by Americk for the attention of the IGP as recently as April 6. Hopefully the IGP will at least respond positively and constructively to the basics of the case that may give an entirely new angle to his investigation.
Sa Tombs: Considering the disgraceful behaviour of two former IGPs and the tantrum of the present one, I am surprised that the former prime minister has faith in the investigative process of PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police).
Mushiro: The controversy about the Altantuya murder will never end until a genuine investigation without the Malaysian police is initiated.
If such an investigation is done, it will not only reveal the alleged mastermind but also the motive for the murder.
It will also reveal all the government agencies which have betrayed our justice system. Not doing this will only keep the Altantuya murder alive.
Turvy: If the cops did not charge PM Najib Razak, that should be clear to all, even to our former PM, that Najib is in the clear. So why the snide remarks from Mahathir?
Does the man know that those found guilty are not culpable? Or is he just on one his miserable jaunts to stir trouble?
Mosquitobrain: Najib must be in his lowest ebb now. By keeping dead quiet, he is doing himself a disservice, thus giving a wrong signal to the public that all the accusations are true and hold water.
NX: It’s true that Mahathir did not accuse anyone but rather raised the same questions the rakyat has raised with regard to the Altantuya murder and the missing immigration records.
So why is Umno getting excited and why is Umno making inferences to the PM?
Mahathir takes on critics, defends his 'agenda'
Sirach: I disagree with Dr M's stand on the ISA, Sedition Act and NEP. Indeed, in almost everything of consequence he did in his long (too long) tenure in office.
History will surely (I think) characterise him as a dismal and divisive prime minister. Yet, I cannot help but grudgingly agree with his efforts to hold Najib accountable.
The nation demands it and Mahathir should not flinch in his efforts. It will be a service to the nation, not a disservice like most of what he has previously done, both in and out of office.
Louis: "Najib cannot even answer and has not answered any question, beyond exercising elegant silence or saying the allegations are not true," said Mahathir.
This statement cannot be more true. Have been watching Australian news daily, not a day passes by where the Australian PM did not answer questions from the press, hostile ones sometimes.
Najib is simply pathetic compared to him.
Ourvotesdecide: Mahathir’s questions are relevant because Najib was the defence minister when the Scorpene submarines were bought and Altantuya's trip to Malaysia when she was murdered was to allegedly ask for her share of the huge commissions made from that deal.
In any case, the purchase of the submarines was also paid with taxpayers’ money. So Mahathir is justified to demand Najib to account for it.
Mosquitobrain: Simply put, Najib is not walking his talk. He has played dumb on many other crucial occasions. Mahathir was spot on. Najib must be seen to be clean, able to explain and answer questions.
Jiminy Qrikert: Better the devil we know than the angel we don’t, said Mahathir. And he was bloody right.
PAS, the angel in white robes and ‘serban’, has turned out to be more venomous than the devil. Stupider though, but more evil.
Now, Mahathir is saying a PM must be seen to be clean and be good for the country. Well, while he was PM, he achieved both.
It’s only after he retired did the s**t hit the fan, so now he wants to ensure the s**t hits the fan while Najib is in office.
Which is how it should be. So, this old man is quite right once again.
Ckl0001: It's good that leaders be criticised so that there is accountability.
I was just wondering what had come out during this long period of Najib's premiership, that is good for the country. Try as I may, I just can't think of anything good yet.
