A MCA leader has asked the senate not to pass the MP pay hike passed in Parliament this week as it will be a burden to the nation's finances.

In an appeal letter to senate president Abu Zahar Ujang to be sent on Monday, MCA central committee member Lua Choon Han asked the senate to delay passing the Members of Parliament (Remuneration) (Amendment) Bill 2014 in view of the economic situation.

"Among the reasons for this appeal is because (the pay hike) will involve a large allocation of government funds and will be a burden in the uncertain economic situation of the country and worldwide.

"Apart from that, teething issues with the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The low price of crude oil has also made the country's revenue uncertain.

"Therefore we appeal to the senators that now is not the appropriate time to raise the pay and allowances of our parliamentarians," said Lua ( left ).

Parliament in the wee hours of Friday passed the bill giving MPs a pay hike of around RM9,500.

In the longest sitting in history, the session that started on Thursday 10am and ended at 4.18am the next day saw the bill tabled towards the end.
