YOURSAY ‘The IGP should abstain himself from involvement this case.’

But Zahid says church protest seditious

Gerard Lourdesamy: The inspector-general of police (IGP) should not have jumped the gun and said that no crime or sedition was committed without any investigation paper being opened.

Considering his own brother was involved together with a slew of other Umno members and Taman Medan branch leaders, the IGP should be the last person to comment and should have left it to the deputy IGP or the director of internal security and public order to investigate and make statements.

The protest was not just about the location of the church but intimidation and incitement to remove the cross, which is a Christian symbol and the core of Christian beliefs.

Would the IGP have made similar irresponsible statements if a mob of Christians in Sarawak or Sabah surrounded a mosque or surau in a 99 percent majority Christian area and demanded that the Muslim call to prayer be silenced?

Why are we condoning the behaviour of Muslims with the mentality of the Islamic State or the Taliban just because they happen to be Umno members? Let the law be applied to all justly.

CQ Muar: Bravo, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, you have just redeemed yourself and are worthy of praise. Wisdom had set in at last, and you've just made your mark as a fair leader.

The nation will cherish and remember you for asserting your authority over the IGP Khalid Abu Bakar, who audaciously claimed the demonstrators' actions were not seditious.

Clearly, Khalid was defending the sacrilegious actions of those demonstrators in which his own brother, Abdullah, was involved in. No one should escape the dragnet for such unruly behaviour towards others' place of worship.

We must respect one another in order maintain peace and harmony in this country we love, regardless of race, religion and ethnicity.

Anon1: Do we need another IGP to keep the current one in check? Why are the police doing the work of the attorney-general (AG)? Or should the IGP and AG switch places?

Once upon a time, it was the police who investigate and submit reports to the AG, who then decides whether to prosecute. Today, the IGP plays all the roles - as investigator, prosecutor, defence attorney, judge and national comedian.

Commentable: The IGP should abstain himself from any involvement in this case because of his brother's link to the matter.

Already we can see contrary statements made between Khalid and his boss, Zahid. This shouldn't happen, particularly when investigations haven't even started or is at the initial stage.

There must not be any interference or influence from people higher up, whether from the government or the police force.

People are watching this case with great interest, so it must be done thoroughly and convincingly and if there are those who are found guilty, then they must face the consequence.

Let's hope there is no preferential treatment in applying the law here.

Headhunter: Once PM Najib Razak is gone, I suspect that the IGP’s job will also be in jeopardy. He has become a liability to Umno and they would want him out.

And is Zahid sincere or just playing politics, like positioning himself for the PM’s job now that many has written off DPM Muyhiddin Yassin?

Drngsc: Dear IGP, what are you waiting for? Perhaps you should go on long leave and have your deputy take over, arrest your brother and bring him in handcuffs for questioning and spend one night in Dang Wangi. One night in purple overalls, please.

They are causing religious and racial disharmony, disturbing the peace, bullying and threatening and also disrespecting the Agong as they do not respect the Federal Constitution.

Please, what are we waiting for? The man with the luxury watch has said it is against the law.

Abasir: What is also significant here is that none of the sultans who normally  (and sometimes even eloquently) express their royal ire when displeased with things like stagnant water negotiations or in a more recent case, black attire at the Perak state assembly, have said a word about this Umno-engineered rampage on a Sunday morning.

Anonymous_4056: How in the world can you justify requesting a church, even in the most gentle tone, to remove its cross. The cross signifies the sacrificial deed of our Saviour without which our Christian faith is in vain.

Anyway, the cross possesses no harm to whoever looks at it or a threat to anyone. Why should the residents be so agitated over the matter?

Ajit Singh Jessy: I live in Tanjung Tokong, Penang and there are no less than three mosques relaying/broadcasting their prayers five times a day. And my family and hundreds of other non-Muslims hear this daily but no one that I know has converted to Islam.

We all know it is meant for the devout Muslims. My family has been living in the same locality for the last 40 years. So can you calculate how many times we have heard the call to prayer?

To top it, both my children went to Convent Light Street and none of them converted to Christianity.

Can someone please put a stop to this madness - that by looking at a cross Muslims may convert to Christianity? Let us instead strengthen our beliefs in our own faiths, for all religions teach that there is one God but there are many ways of praying to him.

Who’s the law - Zahid or Khalid?
