Three hours for brother, three nights for others

YOURSAY ‘He should not be let off just because he's IGP's brother.’

IGP's brother sapped after being quizzed for 3 hours

Swipenter: Abdullah Abu Bakar, did the investigating officers served you tea and cakes  when you were at the police station?

Three hours of friendly questioning is nothing compared to the overnight interrogation of Teoh Beng Hock by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over an alleged misuse of RM2,500, not by him but by his boss.

He was found dead the next morning supposedly having fallen from a 14 th floor window at the MACC office in Shah Alam. What about Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed? And what about A Kugan and others who left the police stations in body bags?

Ferdtan: Just imagine the snickers and the many cynical remarks made of the whole police investigation of the brother of inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar.

It means that the police have lost its credibility and the trust of the people. Many asked, “What only three hours questioning?”

Why was he not detained and arrested on the spot at the police station, like most of the pro-opposition leaders, under sedition law? Abdullah’s involvement was much more serious, and undeniable with video showing his presence at the protest.

The police chief, who is Abdullah’s younger brother, did not help to dispel the allegation of favouritism. In fact, he strengthened it when he quickly dismissed with an off-hand statement that his brother and the ‘anti-cross protest’ were not seditious.

Only after the outcry from the public, including damning statements from Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PM Najib Razak that the police, obviously an afterthought, called him up for questioning.

Is that the way our police work to enforce the law? No action unless there is public outcry and supported by the PM’s call?

Grey Matter: Why was Abdullah not arrested on a Friday night (no court on Saturday and Sunday and thus will have to spend three nights in jail) by balaclava-clad men armed with sub-machine guns while he was asleep?

Why was he not handcuffed? Why was he not kept overnight? Why did he not walk bare footed in purple prison overalls?

Malaysians, don't be fooled. Trust me, he will not be charged under the Sedition Act and even if they do take him to court, he will be found not guilty.

Worst-case scenario - he could be charged under minor section of the law and fined, and not required to spend a single night in prison.

Monty: Abdullah is an Umnoputra. What else could you expect, except a special and gentle interrogation?

Think about all the others recently arrested for 'sedition'. They were arrested and detained overnight or even several nights. Imagine what would have happened if non-Muslims had demonstrated outside a mosque.

As for the IGP, after this episode and his total disregard for the ruling of the High Court involving the case of a child abducted by his Muslim convert father, you wonder if he is indeed a law unto himself.

Oh Ya?: Abdullah was chauffeured to the police station and spent only a few hours in there and he was already complaining.

Indeed, just compare this to his IGP brother's oppression of the oppositionists and dissidents who were arrested at the wee hours of the morning, handcuffed, remanded and only released with bail.

Odin: I really do not think he was grilled. Those who were assigned to question him and record his statements would not want to be tough, or else Khalid would come down on them hard.

No, it was all a charade; they have had a normal conversation, and while they were at it, drank tek tarik or rose syrup and ate curry puffs. Nothing will come of it all.

Anonymous #33227154: He should be charged and jailed for sedition. He should not be let off just because he's IGP's brother. The law should be applied fairly to everyone.

Ipohcrite: Sapped by a mere three hours of cross (whatever that means) examination?

Compare that to being arrested by a 10-man posse and spending a weekend in remand in fashionable purple; then you would have a better perspective of the superior treatment dished out to you by virtue of your "fortunate circumstances."

Anonymous #70881335: Abdullah, for the sake of a moderate Malaysia, I cannot say I am sorry for you.

But I do hope that you allow others to practice their faiths without fear or harassment, just as I am sure you want others to respect yours.

Vijay47: It must have been a most daunting experience Abdullah, fearlessly entering the lions' den like Daniel and spending three hours at the police station.

My only question is - did they also serve you kueh lapis or was it just ketupat?

While they were at it, I hope the police went through the boot of your black Toyota Land Cruiser four-wheel drive with a fine-toothed comb.

Who knows, they could have found a parang there, like they did in the case of the 14-year old boy killed by the police in Shah Alam.
