The police claim they have arrested 29 individuals following the Kita Lawan rally today, but lawyers claim that at least 50 people have been held.

Kuala Lumpur CID chief Zainuddin Ahmad said 29 individuals, including one female, were arrested. They were age between 17 and 51.

He said the detainees are being investigated under Section 143, 427 and 448 of the Penal Code.

Section 143 involves illegal assembly while Section 427 involves committing mischief resulting in damages valued at RM25 and above. Section 448 involves trespass.

Zainuddin said some detainees were also investigated under Section 4 of Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which involves possession of corrosive or explosive substance for the purpose of causing hurt.

He added that smoke bombs were seized from some detainees.

Police will file for remand tomorrow.

However, lawyers for those detained claim that at least 50 people have been arrested after rally goers began dispersing at about 5.30pm.

Earlier today, city police chief Tajudin Md Isa said organisers of the rally were responsible for numerous infractions, including failing to gather at the gazetted location, bringing children to the rally, vandalism, lighting fireworks and letting off smoke bombs.

"This shows the organiser violated the law and regulations stipulated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and Section 141 of the Penal Code for holding an illegal assembly.

"The police will investigate and appropriate action will be taken. The incidents have been documented via photographs and video recordings," he said in a statement.

One protester Aiman Hasran told Malaysiakini that his friend Liwauddin Aminuddin was detained by two men wearing police vests.

"We were asking the KLCC auxiliary police the way to the LRT station but suddenly two men came and grabbed my friend," he said.

Another group claimed that four of their friends were arrested as well.

A protester, who only wanted to be identified as Ali, said some 10 plainclothes men approached them at the KLCC compound.

"They grabbed people and put them in two trucks," he added.

Contacted later, both Dang Wangi police chief Zainol Samah and Tajuddin claimed to have not been updated on the matter.
