YOURSAY ‘Her attempted incarceration only fuels anger of millions of Malaysians.’

Ambiga flays 'faceless cowards' of Bukit Aman

CQ Muar: The entire Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) is brought down and shamed by those cowards.

Those disgraceful cowards, who are apparently their superior or superiors, dare not even show their faces and come out in the open.

Instead, they leave instructions to their subordinates to handle those brought in for questioning.

Such degrading action and abuse of power by the top police personnel must be condemned by everyone.

Anonymous_1371657580: So, the police exist to protect the rakyat or to protect their political masters, whose interests contradict the views of the vast cross-section of the rakyat?

Definitely all the signs are evidence of a ruling administration increasingly intolerant of those who question its excesses or its abuses.

Unafraid: The vast majority of right-thinking Malaysians stand behind people like former Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan who have the courage to speak up for what is right and righteous.

Her attempted incarceration only fuels the anger of millions of moderate Malaysians who are totally fed up with the injustice, corruption and high-handedness perpetuated by the authorities.

Might is never right and history will testify to the cardinal fact that the ultimate power belongs to the people. The more they feel they are intimidated and oppressed, the more they will not yield. It strengthens their resolve.

All that the police have achieved with these unwarranted arrests is to anger the people even more, and erode whatever little respect the rakyat have for the PDRM.

In the final analysis, the government will pay the price for its hands-off policy and failure to check the blatant misuse of force on the simple people.

Senior: As I have said, they will arrest so they can make you wear lock-up dress without slippers to punish you, then apply for remand when your statement could have been recorded within 45 minutes, so as to punish you further.

Then, whether the investigations reveal you have committed a crime or not, you are punished for a night at least. Is this not abuse of police power? Are we not having a Gestapo instead of a royal police force?

Jesse: We are already a police state - thanks to the faceless people who issue orders and their political masters.

Using the police to punish and intimidate is an abuse of the law, and getting away with it as well, is adding insult to injury. What's the attorney-general (AG) doing? As usual, nothing.

Fair Play: The higher echelons of PDRM are not there because of their mental prowess. Hence, they could never comprehend that such treatment would only strengthen the mental resolve of those detained.

Just imagine what could possibly happen if all police stations are flooded with detainees who see is as an honour to be detained overnight.

Dont Just Talk: Ambiga, the Bersih movement and Pakatan Rakyat leaders should not allow the Election Commission to pull another round of gerrymandering for the coming 14th GE and that 51 percent of popular votes means majority rule and not 47 percent.

Putrajaya, with 17,000 voters, has one MP from Umno, while Kapar, Klang, having more than 100,000 voters, is also represented by one MP from Pakatan.

Rural areas in Sabah and Sarawak with less than 50,000 voters should be banded together to ensure that one vote is one real vote, unlike in the present system.

Until and unless Pakatan takes over the government, nothing in Malaysia will ever change.

Corruption and abuse of power will continue to exist and detention by PDRM under Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar's instructions will be like before, if not worse.

Bystander: Send these faceless cowards who abuse their powers to jail. They have to be accountable for their illegitimate actions, since the laws apply to all in a civilised and democratic country.

Anonymous #37634848: Brave and just Ambiga, we salute you. The 20,000 rally-goers, please march to the police station and volunteer to be arrested. This is the model of Mahatma Gandhi's followers against the oppression by the British Raj.

Firestone: It is obvious the leaders are losing their popularity and are desperate and clinging on to power with police help. The more they are cruel to the people, the faster they will lose power.

Vgeorgemy: This is the issue when we have a police leadership heavily indoctrinated with extreme right-wing ideology. They can’t accept that we are living in constitutional democracy, where everyone must be treated equal before the law.

Pputeh: "These were youngsters, some even below 18 years. It was horrendous. They looked shocked and dazed and we had to console them. It is frightening to know how the police treated these youngsters who are not aware of their rights," said Ambiga.

This is very sad. Youngsters will now learn to hate authority and rebel soon. Is this what the police and government want? How do you expect these young people to love the nation? Cruelty will beget cruelty.

Peacemaker: What our dear Ambiga was subjected to is a very mild form of abuse routinely administered to arrestees, especially if they are poor, uneducated or had no lawyers.

We know of cases where female arrestees were groped by police officers. The old case of a nude woman made to do squats is all common abuse dished out to arrestees.

Anonymous 007: IGP, what goes round will come around. It may come in many forms. We will leave it to the upstairs to decide.

3 hours for IGP’s brother, 3 nights for others
