Umno not an exclusive party, says veep

Umno is not an exclusive entity nor does it exist to strengthen any individual, said vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal.

Shafie has been one of the more vocal Umno leaders with regard to the problems plaguing 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

This led to the impression that the Sabah politician is on the same wavelength with former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad who has been campaigning for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s ouster.

Shafie issued his statement in conjunction with Umno’s 69th anniversary from Mecca, where he has gone to perform the umrah. Incidentally, Mahathir is also there for the same purpose.

"Umno should not be seen as an exclusive party or exists to strengthen any individuals. On the contrary, Umno’s strength depends on the support of grassroots," he said.

The minister also said that public confidence must be returned to ensure that Umno remains relevant and as a preparation to face the next general election.

"The time has come to fortify Umno as a party that protects the Malays and bumiputera, Islam and this country that we love.

"This is important so that the party, which is now 69-years-old, continues to get support from the grassroots, especially the young," he added.

Mahathir has warned that Umno would be defeated in the next polls if Najib continues to helm the party.

However, the prime minister has remained defiant.
