Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar today confirmed police are probing claims made by former commando Sirul Azhar Umar regarding the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament's lobby, Wan Junaidi also said that police had met the fugitive Sirul at the Australian immigration detention centre in Sydney where he is being held.

"We have met (him), because of what the public is talking about, we had to (visit him) to investigate his (claims)," he said.

Sirul ( photo ) had previously denied Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar's claim that police had visited him and accused the top cop  of lying .

When asked about Khalid's previous statement that there would be no further action on the case, Wan Junaidi gave a confusing reply.

"'The 'No Further Action' (NFA) order is true. Only the attorney-general can decide on an NFA, no one else," he said.

He refused to comment further as he claimed it would be in contempt of court.

Wan Junaidi said this when confirming a written reply to Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng that the home ministry could not reveal how often it has met Sirul in Australia as this may jeopardise ongoing investigations.

In a written parliamentary reply to Lim earlier today, the home minister also refused to state how many times its officers had met Sirul, or who they were.

“The information requested by Segambut cannot be revealed for now because it is still being investigated by the authorities.

“I fear it will jeopardise the investigation process and the secrecy under which the authorities are investigating,” the minister said in his reply.

Sirul may reveal all

This puzzled Lim as he said police had previously announced there was nothing further to probe on the Altantuya murder.

“The Altantuya case is concluded and final and there is no ongoing investigation so what is the home minister talking about?” he asked during a press conference later at Parliament's lobby.

“The possibility is that this new investigation is about fresh allegations by Sirul (photo) that he was acting under orders,” Lim ( photo ) speculated.

He was refering to Sirul's claims that he had acted under orders with regards to Altantuya's murder and that he was now being made a scapegoat for the crime.

Sirul has also told Malaysiakini that he is mulling revealing all about the Altantuya murder in a bid to clear his name.

The Federal Court had on Jan 13 found Sirul and his colleague Azilah Hadri guilty of the Altantuya's murder and sentenced them both to death. They both then filed for a judicial review and were released.

Sirul however, left the country soon after and was arrested in Australia. He is now being detained at the Villawood detention centre in Sydney.
