Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia has admitted submitting his resignation letter to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

However, Najib did not open the letter and promised to address his grouses and "transform" Parliament.

Hence, Pandikar told reporters at his official residence in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon, he decided to stay put as speaker.

He said if the transformations are not done, then he would resign.

"I will not bow to pressure from the executive. I will announce my resignation. There is no need for others to do so," he added.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said last Saturday that Pandikar had informed him of the resignation when the two met recently.

Yesterday, Mahathir elaborated on the matter by stating that Pandikar had mentioned that the resignation letter had already been submitted to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Pandikar said he met Mahathir on March 13. The latter had advised him to resign immediately.

Following this, Pandikar met Najib on March 18 to submit the resignation letter and informed him of problems that has festered in Parliament since 2008.

He said Najib immediately called the chief secretary to the government and promised implement a transformation programme for Parliament to ensure that the public will not perceive it as a mere rubber stamp.
