PAS today denied that it would sack three iconic members namely singer Wan Aishah Wan Ariffin, former Air Force major Zaidi Ahmad and comedian Sulaiman Ibrahim (Leman Raja Lawak).

 

Party members had complained the three were critical of the party's leadership.

 

However PAS secretary-general, Mustafa Ali, said reports saying the three will be sacked were false.

 

“It is not true. There are no storms or winds brewing,” Mustafa ( photo ) told Malaysiakini in a text message today.

 

Aishah was a 1990's pop singer while Zaidi is well-known as the former Air force major who was sacked for having a press conference on the defective indelible ink used in the last general election. Sulaiman is a comedian from the popular 'Raja Lawak' series.

 

The singer holds a post as PAS Women's wing committee member while Sulaiman is a PAS Youth committee member. Zaidi is a committee member at the Sungai Petani PAS division.

 

Complaints on WhatsApp

Mustafa said he has not received any complaints regarding their criticism of the party and its leadership, although there have been complaints made on web-based messaging application WhatsApp.

 

Their grouses were reported in the Malay daily Sinar Harian today, and some party members have urged that the three be sacked.

 

Sulaiman and Aishah were reported in the daily as saying they were merely voicing their views and would accept whatever decision made by the party.

 

“Several ustaz (religious scholars) in PAS are too extreme and there is a need for a new approach to attract non-Muslims and the younger generation. There are some ustaz in PAS who are chosen as leaders but fail in their tasks. 

 

“They are not only required to give religious classes after subuh (early morning) and maghrib (evening) prayers, they should be also well aware of the feeling on the ground and at the national level,” said Sulaiman, as quoted by the daily.

The daily further reported Sulaiman as saying there were those who criticised merely to gain a post and there were others who used Islam and the religion for their own personal gain.

Aishah, meanwhile, expressed regret her discussion in a closed WhatsApp group had  been spread beyond the group.

“The comments I gave were for the WhatsApp group. Is there no room to state our stand in social media?” she asked.
