'Allow live stream for PAC-1MDB meet, Pandikar'

Two oppositions MPs have suggested the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) conduct a live Internet broadcast when 1Malaysia Development Bhd’s (1MDB) officials finally testify before the committee.

Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng and Ipoh Timur MP Thomas Su said all it would take was for dewan rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia ( below ) to suspend Standing Order 85 for this to happen.

Standing Order 85 bars any testimonies or documents presented to any committee from being disclosed to the public before it is presented to the Dewan Rakyat.

"We believe that the speaker, who recently chose not to resign and has high aspirations to show transparency and reform Parliament, will agree to this proposal," the duo said in a joint statement.

The duo added it was very likely the PAC's bi-partisan members would endorse this proposal as well.

"That is, if they believe there is nothing to hide," they said.

1MDB president and executive director Arul Kanda and former CEO Shahrol Halmi were supposed to testify before the PAC on May 26.

However, the duo told the PAC at the eleventh hour that this was not possible because of prior commitments.

Arul said he and Shahrol needed 30 days to prepare the necessary documents for the PAC. A new date for their appearance has yet to be decided .
