Members of the public have been warned not to spread word that Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman has declared today a public holiday because of the moderate earthquake that hit the state this morning.

According to a statement from this office in Kota Kinabalu, the message claiming the chief minister had made the announcement has gone viral on the social media, particularly through the WhatsApp messaging application.

"Please note that the news that the Sabah chief minister has declared today a public holiday as a result of the earthquake is false.

"Please stop spreading the hoax," the statement says.

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit Ranau in Sabah at 7.15am today, with tremors felt in most places on the west coast of Sabah, including Ranau, Tambunan, Tuaran, Pedalaman, Kota Kinabalu and Kota Belud.

According to the National Earthquake and Tsunami Centre, the quake's epicentre was 16km north west of Ranau.

Meanwhile, Sabah police chief Commissioner Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman is expected to hold a press conference relating to the earthquake at 1.45pm today.
