The Dewan Rakyat today observed a minute’s silence in remembrance of those killed in the earthquake which hit Sabah last Friday.

Members of Parliament from the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) and the opposition stood to observe the silence, and Muslim MPs recited the Al-Fatihah, before the start of today’s proceedings.

Deputy speaker Ismail Mohamed Said said the Dewan Rakyat was saddened by the incident and sympathised with families and victims involved.

“The Dewan Rakyat expresses its condolence to families of the victims and hopes efforts to locate, rescue and assist the victims will be made easier,” he said.

He said the Dewan Rakyat also hoped the families would remain steadfast and courageous in facing the test.

The earthquake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale shook Ranau at 7.15am, causing tremors which could also be felt in Tambunan, Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu and Kota Belud.

As of yesterday, 16 people were confirmed dead, including eight Singaporeans.
