'PAS has to be replaced, in a new coalition'

PAS needs to be replaced in a new opposition coalition, with Pakatan Rakyat coming to an end, says Persatuan Ummah Sejahtera Malaysia (PasMa) president Phahrolrazi Zawawi.

This, he said, is because with PAS severing ties with DAP, it means that Pakatan has been dissolved.

"If PAS severs ties with DAP and cannot sit together, then Pakatan no longer exists.

"If PAS exits, then the coalition is incomplete and it will need a replacement to fill the vacuum," Phahrolrazi ( photo ) is quoted as saying in a Sinar Harian report today.

He said this was because under the previous coalition configuration, each member party had its role to play and a replacement would be needed to maintain the support for the opposition in the next general election.

"For example, DAP has many non-Malay supporters, PKR can get support from various races and PAS has many Malay supporters," Phahrolrazi said.

PasMa to decide if it's to be political party

As for PasMa, a loose grouping of pro-Pakatan PAS members, Phahrolrazi said it would decide whether to formally become a political party in a meeting next Saturday.

This following the purging of all the pro-Pakatan leaders in last week’s PAS election, with the ulama faction taking over the party leadership.

The new PAS leadership dominated by conservative hardliners also approved a motion at the party’s muktamar to sever ties with DAP.

This prompted DAP to declare Pakatan to be dead, with Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng calling for PAS members to resign from the more than 1,000 state government appointments in Penang.

Following the demand, the new PAS leadership appeared to backtrack, claiming the approved motion was not final and urged its members not to quit.
