Umno calls DAP’s mosque plan ‘insult to Muslims’

Kelantan Umno liaison chairperson Mustapa Mohamed said the DAP's plan to build a mosque in Gua Musang is an insult to Muslims in this country.

"It is an attempt to deny the federal government's efforts of building over 24,000 mosques and surau nationwide," he told reporters after closing the Malaysian Islamic Development Colloquium in Kota Baharu last night according to Bernama .

DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke was reported by Malaysiakini saying they have agreed to build a mosque at Pasir Tumboh, Gua Musang, after a request from the imam and residents.

The DAP leader said this is part of a humanitarian effort to help the residents rebuild their community after the devastating flood last year-end.

Loke added that DAP assures that funds to build the mosque would be from the public and free of haram (forbidden) elements such as gambling.

Responding to this, Mustapa said a thorough investigation should be done before the construction of the mosque to ensure the validity of funds used.

"This matter should be investigated as a mosque is a sacred place for Muslims. Ensure that the source of funds is halal," he added.

‘Halal or not, still insult’

Meanwhile, Kelantan Umno religious affairs bureau chairperson Ashraf Wajdi Dusuki said the halal status of funds did not make it right.

"The DAP's plan to build a mosque in Gua Musang is an insult to Muslims in this country."

He said the federal government had given priority to the construction and repair of mosques, especially after the floods hit Kelantan late last year.

"As of early June, a total of 98 mosques and 170 madrasah have been restored with an allocation of RM4.3 million."
