Baru Bian shoots down BN's overtures

Sarawak PKR head Baru Bian has turned down Chief Minister Adenan Satem's invitation that he return to the BN fold.

"I am willing to work together with the chief minister in every aspect for the betterment of Sarawak, but from my side of the floor," said Baru in a press release today.

On May 30, Adenan had told a gathering of Lun Bawang people in Trusan that Baru, who was a guest at the event, should rejoin BN. This would allow him, as the Ba Kelalan state assemblyperson, to bring progress to his constituency and Lun Bawang people.

"Please feel that you are among friends. I will try to get the prodigal son to come back," Adenan ( photo ) had said.

Baru had joined Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) in the 1980s and quickly rose up the ranks.

PBDS dissolved in 2004, resulting in the creation of Parti Rakyat Sarawak and the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP). Baru did not join either. He joined PKR in 2008.

Baru said Adenan's  overture was a tacit admission that BN had failed to bring any progress to the Lun Bawang community over the past 52 years.

"Before I was elected as the Ba Kelalan lawmaker, the seat had always been held by BN. In fact, today we still have a Lun Bawang man serving as a BN MP.

"What progress and development did the succession of BN representatives bring to Ba Kelalan? People will tell you: Not much!

"It is therefore rather gratifying to me that the CM and his ministers are now showing increasing concern for the interests and wellbeing of the Lun Bawangs," he said.

Moreover, Baru said BN at the federal level is perpetuating racial strife and economic disaster, thus is not worthy of support.
