DAP: Pakatan would have split if GE13 won

Pakatan might have broken up earlier if it had won the 13th general elections, said DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang.

This is because PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had never supported PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to become the prime minister, he said in a statement today.

"The Pakatan crisis might have come even earlier if Pakatan had been successful in winning the majority of the parliamentary seats in GE13 two years ago, as Hadi had never accepted Anwar as the Pakatan candidate to be prime minister," Lim said

Last year, then-PKR director of strategy Rafizi Ramli revealed that PAS under Hadi had rejected Anwar's candidacy for premiership, favouring Kelantan Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah instead.

DAP last week declared the opposition pact dead, but PAS maintains that it is still alive.

Lim however said, the opposition pact has in fact been dead for at least a year now, and has only existed in name.

“The PAS muktamar resolution cutting ties with DAP is the last straw that breaks the camel’s back as for a year Pakatan Rakyat had existed in name but not in fact.

“(This is) because Hadi had violated the two basic and bedrock Pakatan Rakyat principles, the Pakatan common policy framework and the consensus operational principle that the agreement of all three Pakatan component parties are needed for any Pakatan motion to be made and that in addition), no single leader has the veto power to override the decisions of the Pakatan leadership council, he said.

Lim accused Hadi of having “complete disregard” for consensus by overriding decisions made by the Pakatan leadership council and the PAS central working committee.

He also expressed astonishment over Hadi’s claim that Pakatan is not dead, since its secretariat had found it “almost impossible” to fix a meeting that Hadi could attend.

'No need to despair'

On another note, Lim said there is no need to despair over Malaysia’s political future despite the collapse of the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.

“I am confident that Malaysians who want political change can prevail to face up to the great challenge of ensuring that the Pakatan common policy framework principles and objectives not only remain valid and relevant, but also achievable, in the 14th general election although there is no Pakatan Rakyat left [...]

“DAP will work with like-minded political parties like Parti Keadilan Rakyat and political forces including individuals to fashion a new coalition firmly based on the Pakatan common policy framework principles and objectives which have been abandoned by the Hadi leadership of PAS,” he said.
