Subra: Palanivel's call for CWC meeting 'illegal'

MIC leaders have been told not to attend the party’s central working committee (CWC) meeting called by MIC president G Palanivel to fix a date for re-election of MIC central leadership because “it is illegal".

Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam, who is calling himself acting MIC president, said in a statement today: "There has been news in the media that G Palanivel is calling a meeting of CWC 2009 at Pullman Hotel tomorrow.

"This is an illegal meeting called by a non-member and thus I urge innocent members not to be trapped into participating in an illegal meeting. Palanivel had lost his membership on the 24th of February."

Subramaniam said the CWC, as elected in 2009, was recognised by Registrar of Societies (ROS) and it has initiated all measures to expedite the conducting of the MIC elections.

He blamed “irresponsible acts” of Palanivel ( photo ) for having brought the party to this unfortunate state.

The MIC internal crisis started after the election of three vice-presidents and 23 central working committee members at the party's annual general meeting in 2013 was hit with widespread allegations of malpractices.

The elections of these 26 people were subsequently declared null and void by the ROS, by way of a directive dated Dec 5, 2014.

Palanivel and his supporters then took the ROS to court to reverse its fresh elections order while those opposing him filed orders to have the ROS directive carried out.

The High Court has since dismissed two judicial review applications filed by Palanivel and four others to quash the ROS directive.

Palanivel then suspended deputy president S Subramaniam and one of the party's vice-presidents, M Saravanan.

Subramaniam then declared that he has taken over MIC as its acting president, claiming Palanivel's membership in MIC was automatically revoked the moment he took the ROS to court without obtaining approval from the CWC.
