Bank Negara Malaysia and the police have been urged to immediately investigate and act on the banking information leaks reported recently.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said protecting the privacy of customers should be the top priority of every bank as provided by various existing laws including the Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989 (Bafia) and the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

"Bank Negara has to take action. If not, the people will lose their confidence in our banking institutions.

"Who will believe the bank if details of accounts can be shared and disseminated to the public?" he said at the launch of the 2015 national-level Aidilfitri Special Farmers' Market in Hulu Selangor today.

Ismail, who is an Umno supreme council member, said several incidents of bank accounts information being shared and disseminated by the people was proof of the weakness of banking institutions in protecting the personal accounts and data of customers.

Ismail gave the example of Sarawak Report today which alleged the prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor received deposits totalling RM2 million between Feb 10 and Apr 23 this year.

Ismail said if the matter was not acted upon quickly, the future of

banking institutions might be affected.
