Police are trying to determine whether the documents on the 1MDB investigation that have been leaked are genuine or have been doctored.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the force has not ruled out a possible conspiracy to subvert the democratic process and topple Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Khalid said all members of the special task force would be investigated, including Bank Negara personnel.

"The objective of the police investigation is to identify those who have leaked the materials and determine whether the documents are genuine or have been doctored.

"(This is) as in the case of Xavier Justo ( photo ), who is being investigated by Thai authorities for blackmail and extortion," Khalid said in a statement today.

Justo is accused of tampering with leaked copies of email on 1MDB and its business partner PetroSaudi International.

Weeks after Justo was arrested, The Wall Street Journal and Sarawak Report published a series of damning reports that RM2.6 billion had been deposited into Najib's personal accounts.

Leaks constitute as economic sabotage

Sarawak Report had also published an expose revealing that Najib's wife, Rosmah Mansor had RM2 million banked into her account via multiple transactions earlier this year.

These claims were backed up by leaked documents, which include bank account numbers.

Khalid said the leaks, doctored or otherwise, were offences under the Financial Services Act, the Islamic Financial Services Act, the Official Secrets Act (OSA) and the Penal Code.

He said it could also constitute as economic sabotage, and warned that those found guilty of the leaks will face the full force of the law.
