PAS: Rebels' movement will only benefit BN

A new political landscape with Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) in it will only serve to benefit BN, said Selangor PAS commissioner Iskandar Samad.

This, he said, is because GHB's focus right now is to consolidate its position among PAS members instead of targeting Umno and BN.

"The opposition stands to benefit if this development can attract BN voters, but will this happen?

"I am not confident of this as the new movement by the defeated PAS leaders appear to only focus on PAS members," he said in a statement yesterday.

GHB is a movement set up by PAS progressive leaders who were ousted from the party leadership in June by the conservative faction.

The movement is a precursor to a new political party that intends to be more inclusive as PAS drifts to the right.

However, Iskandar, who is also a PAS vice president, said GHB will likely hurt PAS but not BN.

"I can only see it 'stealing' PAS members, supporters and voters.

"The members, supporters and voters of Umno and BN will remain as it is," it said.

'Votes may shift to BN'

Likewise, with the breakup of Pakatan, Iskandar said if DAP were to contest in PAS seats, it will only serve to split the opposition votes in favour of BN.

"Be it GHB or DAP, remember that a strategy of revenge will be felt by the rakyat.

"Support for the opposition will not increase (this way). There will only be a shifting of votes between opposition parties.

"Instead, there is a strong likelihood that votes may shift to BN as they no longer see the opposition as a viable alternative due to the quarrels," he said.

Iskandar said like it or not, this new political landscape will come to pass, adding that the opposition will only have itself to blame for giving BN a lifeline.
