Selangor PAS has urged any of its MPs and assemblypersons planning to join another party to step forward and vacate their seats.
“Why it is taking so long to declare that you are leaving PAS? Why the need to hide?” queried Selangor PAS secretary Mohd Khairuddin Othman in a statement today.
Separately, Kelantan PAS wings are demanding disciplinary action to be taken against PAS leaders involved in setting up of the splinter party Gabungan Harapan Baru (GBH).
In a joint statement today, the chiefs of the Ulama, Youth, Women and PAS Supporters’ wings said the actions of the breakaway leaders are detrimental to the party.
“In light of important party leaders involved in the setting up of GBH still holding on to their party posts, we call for a disciplinary proceeding against those proven to be acting against the interests of the party,” said the quartet.
“We fully feel disciplinary action is warranted to protect the stability of the party from being disturbed by those alleged to be GHB supporters,” said Kelantan’s Ulama chief Hassan Mahmood, Muslimat chief Siti Zailah Yusof, Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari and Supporter’s Wing chief Lim Guan Seng.
They were responding to ceramah on Sunday night concurrently in Kangar, Perlis and Kota Bharu, Kelantan to rally support for the PAS progressives’ in starting a new party, that drew thousands.
The Kelantan wing chiefs said unlike those leaders, they stood firm alongside party chief Abdul Hadi Awang and the state government under Menteri Besar Ahmad bin Yakob.
“This is a show of solidarity in the face of attacks against the party leadership and state government by individuals linked to GHB,” said the four.
Leaving it to central leadership
As for Mohd Khairuddin ( photo ), he said Selangor PAS would leave it to the PAS central leadership to decide on any action against defecting MPs and assemblypersons.
Following the party’s most acrimonious muktamar in recent times where PAS progressive leaders were practically wiped out of the top leadership in the party polls, disgruntled members have banded together to form an alternative Islamic party.
The move is seen to be spurred on by the party's decision to cut ties with key Pakatan Rakyat partner DAP, following a muktamar motion that was pushed through without debate.
Former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim had said that work is underway to form a new opposition coalition, which would include GHB.
Responding to Anwar, Mohd Khairuddin said Selangor PAS believes that this would not affect the existing Selangor government coalition.
“We will continue to remain in the existing Selangor government,” he said.
PAS has 15 assemblypersons in the Selangor state assembly, compared to 15 in DAP, 13 in PKR, 12 in Umno, and one independent representative.
