'Will Hadi support PM no-confidence vote?'

Opposition MPs would be unlikely to put forward a unanimous vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak should such a motion be tabled today.

DAP Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang said this in view of what he said was PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s alleged new-found support for the prime minister.

"One year ago, I could state with confidence that if there is a confidence motion on Najib as prime minister in Parliament, all the MPs from Pakatan Rakyat would cast a vote of no confidence against Najib.

"This is not the position today. Will Hadi and his stalwarts support any such vote of no confidence against Najib in Parliament?

"This is unlikely, considering Hadi’s extraordinary defence of Najib," said Lim in a statement today.

"I said yesterday that it is Hadi’s prerogative if he wants to provide a lifeline to support Najib and to shore up the prime minister in the gathering storm over the 1MDB scandal.

"But he has no right to tell lies and falsehoods about the DAP in pursuit of his new political objective to be ‘a friend in need is a friend indeed’ to Najib who faced mounting calls for his resignation, even coming from Umno circles," he said.

Hadi wants to be 'master'

Lim was responding to the PAS chief’s accusation that disgruntled progressive PAS leaders breaking away from the Islamic party was being subservient to DAP .

"This is not only utterly baseless and most contemptible falsehood from a former Pakatan leader," said Lim.

"It is with great reluctance that I have to state my utmost regret that Hadi Awang is continuing to parrot the baseless Umno propaganda line that DAP wants to be ‘master’ over other parties, to camouflage his new political stand to be Najib Razak’s stoutest defender at a time when even Umno leaders and members are looking for new directions for the country," he added.

During the party’s heated muktamar last month, the progressives were incessantly demonised as lackeys and traitors for aligning themselves with PAS’ Pakatan Rakyat coalition partner DAP.

Lim said on the contrary, it was Hadi whom he alleged wanted to be "master" of the opposition coalition, citing the PAS chief’s decisions over the past two years that had gone against what the Pakatan leadership had collectively agreed upon.

These included Hadi’s decision to field PAS candidates against PKR in six seats during the last general election, his refusal to abide by PKR’s decision to nominate party president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the replacement to the Selangor menteri besar, and the hudud bill.

"It was precisely because Hadi violated not only the Pakatan common policy framework but the consensus operational principle, wanting to be ‘master’ in Pakatan Rakyat that the coalition went from one crisis to another," he said.

"In fact, Hadi also did not agree to the proposal for Anwar Ibrahim to be the Pakatan’s candidate for prime minister," he added.

Lim said it was no exaggeration to say that "Hadi was the single cause of the death of Pakatan Rakyat".
