"There are leaders who do not like to take advice and when they are reprimanded, then the messenger gets shot," he said this when officiating the annual general meeting of Cheras Umno division's Wanita, Youth, and Puteri wings in Kuala Lumpur today.
Mukhriz said such leaders were more interested to go after the messenger than actually addressing the problems raised.
He warned that this would potentially create a culture of fear.
"This is dangerous as if it keeps happening, sooner or later, people will not dare to speak up.
"If problems arise, then (leaders) will need to resolve it on their own (without help from others)," he said.
'We should thank them'
Mukhriz's remarks came amid a row between his father Mahathir Mohamad and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Mahathir, who had lamented that Najib refuses to listen to his advice, has attacked the prime minister's handling of controversy-plagued 1MDB and demanded that he resign.
Mukhriz said that a leader can only be strong when his followers and supporters are many and on the same page as their leader.
"So don't shoot people when they convey information or news to us.
"Instead, investigate and if we find it to be true, we should thank them as there are people who love (us).
"The information may not make people happy but it helps improve the situation," he said.
