Sarawak Report was down worldwide

The whistleblower site Sarawak Report , which is at the forefront of critical reports about the embattled 1MDB, was inaccessible today, even to internet users outside of Malaysia.

The reason for the downtime is unclear, but attempting to access the site would only display a message that reads, “503 - Service unavailable. The request could not be fulfilled.”

The error code 503 means that Sarawak Report ’s server is down.

This comes just a week after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) ordered Malaysian internet service providers to block access to Sarawak Report , claiming among others, that the website’s content is a threat to national stability.

MCMC's block does not apply to internet service providers outside of Malaysia.

However, checks by Malaysiakini today found that the website became inaccessible starting this morning, even abroad.

Malaysiakini 's checks with contacts in Cambodia, Australia, Singapore and the USA reported the same error.

Another check through the website ‘Is it down right now?’ showed that Sarawak Report was inaccessible from anywhere in the world.

Access to the site was eventually restored in the late afternoon.

According to media, the website’s editor-in-chief Clare Rewcastle-Brown has said she suspected that the site was hacked.
