Constitutional law expert and former law lecturer from the International Islamic University, Abdul Aziz Bari, has joined the DAP.

Aziz, who was unveiled as the party’s latest Malay member, said he was impressed with DAP's meritocracy and inclusiveness.

Prior to this, Aziz contested the 2013 general election for the Sabak Bernam parliamentary seat under the PKR ticket, but lost to the BN's Mohd Fasiah Mohd Fakeh.

Aziz was present with DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang and party national publicity secretary Tony Pua at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

"I am not asking for any position or anything. I just want to contribute (to the party)," he said.

Asked why he chose to join DAP instead of sticking with PKR, Aziz said his expertise would be fully utilised in DAP.

"I'm looking for a bigger space that will give me more freedom, where my talent and expertise will be fully utilised," he said.

He disclosed he did inform PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli of his decision, but declined to elaborate on Rafizi's reaction.

It was reported last month that Aziz had denied speculation he was joining DAP, but now he says he did not actually say that.

"I never made any statement. The reporters made their own conclusions," he explained.

Fellow DAP member A Samad Said, who was also at the press conference, said he was surprised when he heard about Aziz joining the party, but is glad.

"I hope that with him joining the party, it will change the perception that DAP is only for the Chinese," Pak Samad said.
