It is not a crime for political parties to receive donation from supporters, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

"In Malaysia, there's no law to prohibit political parties from receiving contributions from supporters," the Umno Youth chief pointed out.

Khairy was responding to queries on the RM2.6 bilion in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank accounts.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) declared yesterday that the RM2.6 billion deposited into Najib's accounts came from donations and not from state-owned 1MDB.

Under the MACC Act 2009, donations are defined as a form of gratification.

Khairy said political donations were practiced by politicians regardless of their parties.

"Not only Umno and BN, every politician receive donations from their supporters to help them in political works. I am sure all the parties get contributions from friends and supporters," he said.

To a question as to whether is it a standard procedure for political donation go into personal or party accounts, he replied this could vary.

"It can vary, (the donations can either) go into the party's account or a personal account as long as the personal account is held in trust for the party.

"So there's nothing to prohibit an individual from receiving it as long as he receives it in trust for the party," he said.
