Cops still in talks with suspects in Sandakan kidnapping
The police are still negotiating with the kidnappers of the two Malaysians who were kidnapped from a restaurant in Sandakan last May 14 in a bid to secure their release without paying any ransom.
Sabah police commissioner Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the kidnappers had initially demanded RM60 million ransom at first, but the amount was reduced by more than 50 percent after several rounds negotiation.
“We are still negotiating. The families of the victims cannot afford the amount demanded by the kidnappers,” he told reporters after an Aidilfitri celebration in Kota Kinabalu today.
He said based on phone calls received by families, the victims were in a safe condition and they were placed in an interior location in the southern Philippines.
Jalaluddin said the Philippine police were also assisting Malaysia in looking for an amicable solution to the kidnap case.
“We request the cooperation of the Philippines to identify the group of kidnappers to hand over the victims in a professional way,” he added.
