Malaysian MH370 relatives express ‘great sorrow’

MH370 Malaysian relatives of passengers on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 voiced grief and disbelief today over news that wreckage found last week was probably from the missing aeroplane.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak told a press conference early today that experts had “conclusively confirmed” that the wreckage found on Reunion island in the western Indian Ocean was from MH370.

Selamat Omar, 62, the father of one passenger, expressed “great sorrow” over the announcement.

“I could not believe it at first,” he said, his voice cracking. “But I have to accept this as fate.”

Selamat said he wants the Malaysian government to continue searching for the missing plane, “so they could bring my son home”.

Jacquita Gonzales, whose husband Patrick Gomes was the chief steward on the flight, also said she hoped the government would continue looking for the plane.

“That is the only time we will have closure,” she said.

Rema Idris, 68, whose niece Nor Fadzillah Mat Rahim was among the MH370 passengers, said her family was torn with grief over the announcement.

“We still could not believe it,” she said. “We need time to fully understand this. I want my niece back.”
