An Umno division today reiterated its urging to former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin to quit politics and resign as Umno deputy president as he was no longer relevant to the party.
The suggestion was made by Jamal Mohd Yunos, division head of the Sungai Besar Umno division, who said the Umno number two was no longer on good terms with party president Najib Abdul Razak.
"I find that Muhyiddin is no longer relevant in leading the party as he no longer is congenial with the prime minister. His statements contradict the party president's stand," he said.
He blamed Muhyiddin's open criticism of Najib for what he said was the opposition's sensationalising of the yet-to-be settled 1MDB issue and the cabinet reshuffle on July 28.
"His statement resulted in a drop in the support and confidence of the rakyat and grassroots," he said in a statement.
Jamal had first demanded Muhyiddin's party resignation on July 30, two days after Muhyiddin was dropped as deputy prime minister for being too vocal on the controversial 1MDB issue.
Manipulative statements
Jamal said Muhyiddin has caused an internal rift in Umno while his actions and statements were seen as though he intended to undermine Najib's credibility.
"He should place the party's interest above his personal interest," he added.
"From my observation, his statements appear to be manipulative in a manner that wants to cheat party members and the rakyat," he said.
He opined that Muhyiddin has became a liability to the party which could led to distrust against the supreme council and as such, this warranted his resignation.
"I call for him to quit politics and give an oppotunity to other leaders who can cooperate with then party president in Umno's struggle," he said.
