DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has expressed wariness at PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man's call for a re-united opposition though describing it as 'perfectly correct'.
This, Lim said, was because former deputy PAS president Mohamad Sabu too had made sound proposals only to be vetoed by his president Abdul Hadi Awang.
"Mat Sabu, when he was PAS deputy president, had also made very sound, reasonable and rational proposals.
"But we in Pakatan Rakyat found to our shock and disbelief that he did not have the authority and mandate of the PAS No 1, who would override and veto him with regard to Pakatan leadership council decisions and resolutions on the grounds that only the PAS No 2 had attended the council's meeting and not the PAS No 1," said Lim in a statement today.
"What is more mortifying, we also found later to our horror that the PAS No 1 could even renege and violate Pakatan leadership council decisions of which he had been a party of having attended the meetings himself," he said.
This, Lim ( photo ) said, ultimately led to the demise of Pakatan.
As such, he said the new opposition coalition must not be 'unity for the sake of unity' but must have a clear set of common political principles and objectives.
Umno members not sheep
Last week, Tuan Ibrahim expressed concern over several scandals plaguing the nation including the deposits of RM2.6 billion into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank accounts.
He had stated that this was a crucial hour for all opposition parties to close ranks.
Lim said Malaysians should not stop demanding answers over the RM2.6 billion affair and the three million Umno members should likewise do the same.
"I do not believe that three million Umno members are so dumb that they could give support to Najib over the RM2.6 billion deposited into the prime minister’s personal accounts without knowing how the RM2.6 billion had been spent.
"Najib should not regard the three million Umno members as a flock of sheep who will give him a blank cheque of support regardless of how he had made use of the RM2.6 billion in his personal AmBank accounts in," noted Lim.
