Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz, the son of the late PAS spiritual advisor Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, will not join Gerakan Harapan Baru, according to the splinter group's Kelantan chapter head Wan Abdul Rahim Wan Abdullah.

However, Nik Omar shares the movement's ideals, said Wan Abdul Rahim.

"Nik Omar is not part of GHB. His thoughts resonate with us, but he can't join us because of his position in his family and the position of his mother.

"I know Nik Omar can't join us now because of family issues. He respects his mother and doesn't want to put her in a difficult position," said Wan Abdul Rahim when contacted.

Spotted at GHB event

Wan Abdul Rahim explained that rumours of Nik Omar's entry into GHB resulted from his appearance at a GHB event in Kota Bharu last Thursday.

During the event, Nik Omar spoke on how his father had wanted Pakatan Rakyat to defeat Umno at the polls.

Wan Abdul Rahim also said Nik Omar has a vast network of contacts which had helped him build a comprehensive understanding of Malaysian politics.

"While studying abroad, he had many friends. Not just PAS members.

“He has links with Ikram (an Islamic NGO). He is aware of other schools of thought apart from PAS.

"I can understand his disappointment," he said.
