Dr Mahathir Mohamad may have accused Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of trying to scuttle the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) investigations but the graft buster wouldn't even dare open a probe if the former prime minister was in power.
Contrary to Mahathir's claim, says an article posted on pro-Najib portal MyKMU.net, the unprecedented probe into the RM2.6 billion deposited into Najib's personal bank accounts is precisely because the prime minister allows "due process of the law".
The writer was responding to Mahathir's blog posting yesterday accusing Najib of "stealing the government" and blocking all institutions meant to keep him accountable.
"Tun (Mahathir) may wonder how the government can allow Bank Negara, the police and MACC to investigate the prime minister. This cannot possibly happen during Tun's time," the article says.
It added that the transfer of two MACC officers involved in the investigation was also aborted so as to avoid accusations of interference.
‘No need to list cases’
"Did the Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC's predecessor) investigate Petronas's decision to rescue Konsortium Perkapalan Berhad (KPB) belonging to Mirzan Mahathir for RM1.4 billion in 1997? It did not.
"There is no need to list the cases during Tun's administration that went uninvestigated," it adds.
MyKMU.net also addressed Mahathir's statement that likened Najib's current situation to former US president Richard Nixon's Watergate scandal.
It said Nixon was only forced to resign as there was recorded evidence that he abused his power but there has yet been evidence to implicate Najib.
Furthermore, the news portal also defended the removal of Abdul Gani Patail as attorney-general, calling him a Mahathir man who may also be out to get Najib.
"What is the risk that if Gani remains as attorney-general? With a stroke of the pen, Najib can lose his position and face years of trial before a decision is reached.
