DAP has agreed to be part of the national consultative committee to oversee political funding (JKNMPP), newly set up by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak - but on a condition.

In its central executive committee meeting last night, the party unanimously approved the motion but only if the issue of the RM2.6 billion deposited into the premier’s private account was fully addressed by the committee.

“This is a pre-condition for DAP to participate," said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng in a statement today.

Najib had announced last Friday the newly set up JKNMPP to provide a check-and-balance mechanism to political funding.

The committee is now seeking the feedback from the stakeholders, which include opposition parties.

The prime minister has urged the opposition to support the effort.

Ministers in the Prime Minister's Department Paul Low ( photo ) and Idris Jala, were appointed as JKNMPP chairperson and deputy chairperson respectively.

DAP, however, demanded Low and Idris relinquish their ministerial positions, alleging they tried to cover-up the RM42 billion 1MDB financial scandal and the RM2.6 billion donation scandal.

Make assets known

According to Lim, both ministers had betrayed the principles of transparency and accountability they had pledged to uphold.

Lim also challenged the prime minister to prove his commitment towards integrity and accountability by requiring all office-bearers to publicly declare their assets as done by Penang state government.

He said it should be compulsory for the prime minister, cabinet ministers, chief ministers and state executive councillors to make known their assets.

The party also endorsed the Bersih 4 rally which is demanding the resignation of Najib Abdul Razak as prime minister and for him to take full responsibility for the RM2.6 billion donation controversy.

The party will seek a vote of no-confidence in Parliament if Najib refuses to quit, he asserted.

Lim added the party also expressed its deepest condolences to the victims of the horrifying bomb blast in Bangkok on Tuesday which caused the loss of 20 lives of which seven were Malaysians.
