Another rep wants BN MPs to join forces
Another opposition MP has joined the growing chorus urging BN MPs to link arms in ousting Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin said this is in light of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's failure to give a satisfactory explanation on the RM2.6 billion deposited into his personal bank accounts and apparent attempts to scuttle investigations into the matter.
"Be brave enough to support a vote of no-confidence against Najib. Do not fear his power. Do the right thing and your future generations will thank you for it.
"You will be able to walk tall and be among the heroes to save Malaysia. You will be a part of Malaysia's history," she said in a statement today.
Zuraida pointed out that Najib had previously been plagued by a series of scandals.
"The prime minister's name is inelegantly associated with every known financial scandal that the country is troubled with.
"Starting with the Scorpene scandal, KWAP pensioner's scheme, Mara kickbacks, Felda funds, 1MDB, and most recently the RM2.6 billion cover-up.
"These controversies tarnish our country's image and adversely affects our aim to become a developed nation by 2020," said Zuraida, who is also PKR Wanita chief.
New government
Yesterday, PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli urged at least 25 BN MPs to join forces with the opposition for a vote of no-confidence against the embattled PM.
However, Rafizi, who is also Pandan MP, outlined that the new government replacing Najib's must be committed to democratic and institutional reforms.
This followed former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's call for the opposition to support a no-confidence vote against Najib but allow BN to remain in power.
DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang ( photo ), who is also Gelang Patah MP, had described the proposal as "interesting" and expressed willingness to discuss the matter.
In a statement today, Lim set a higher bar, stating that the support of at least 35 Umno MPs is needed to pull off a no-confidence vote.
"Although the three former Pakatan Rakyat parties of DAP, PKR, and PAS have a total of 88 MPs, it will be foolhardy for anyone to assume that the 21 PAS MPs will all support a vote of no confidence against Najib unless this is clearly and specifically spelt out by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang himself.
"In the circumstances, the safest bet is to assume that some 75-78 Opposition MPs will take a united common position on the no-confidence motion with the balance having to be made up from Umno and BN MPs," he said.
PAS was less enthusiastic about Mahathir's proposal, with its deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man calling it "half-baked", stressing that the problem lies with the entire BN coalition and not Najib alone.
While not keen on keeping a BN government following Najib ouster, Tuan Ibrahim had indicated that PAS may be willing to support a no-confidence vote if the terms were different.
