DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang today welcomed assurances from inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar that the police would not interfere if there was a no-confidence vote on Prime Minister Najib Razak in Parliament if it was free of criminal elements.

Lim, who is also Gelang Patah MP said he welcomed Khalid's admission .

“Specifically, the IGP said the police will not interfere in the allegation against a senior Umno politician attempting to unseat Najib through a vote of no confidence in Parliament.

“They are only concerned with attempts to topple the government or PM through undemocratic means," said Lim.

The Gelang Patah MP said he had earlier today asked Khalid to declare whether police had discovered any plot as claimed by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to topple the government by violent or unconstitutional means.

Lim ( photo ) pointed out that the very person who should be investigated was Ahmad Zahid himself whom he alleged was illegally and unconstitutionally abusing the legal process to deny a change of PM or government through the democratic process

“I am glad that the IGP and the top police leadership realise that any effort at the peaceful, democratic and constitutional change of the PM or government is none of the business of police.

“It is an integral part of the process of parliamentary democracy, provided a new majority of Parliamentarians could be found to support a new PM or a new government.

“The police must always be mindful of its independent, professional and non-partisan political role and should never be a tool of any political party or individual to undermine the democratic process,” he said.

'Zahid irresponsible'

Lim added Ahmad Zahid as the new DPM and home minister, should apologise for abusing his position as minister and misleading people to lodge false reports about a violent plot or an unconstitutional toppling of government.

Zahid ( photo ), he said, had denied his assertions of a plot to topple the government were fake and claimed they were not only real but had been verified by the intelligence reports of several security agencies.

“The IGP’s statement today confirms that Zahid has been the most irresponsible home minister in the country's 58-year-old history, abusing and exploiting his powers and position to consolidate his position.

“I hope Ahmad Zahid will learn to be more humble and responsible with his sudden elevation as the No 2 man in the federal government,” he said.
