Kuala Krai MP Dr Hatta Ramli denied claims that he is automatically divorced from his wife, following claims by Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yaakob.

Ahmad claimed Hatta must now register his divorce with the courts, since all Kelantan PAS elected representatives took a baiah (oath) that they would divorce their spouses if they leave PAS, the New Straits Times reported today.

Hatta is the only Kelantan elected representative to leave PAS to join splinter party Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah).

"I thank him for trying to arrange my life but there is no such thing. Let it be. He has no business in my family affairs," Hatta told Malaysiakini when contacted.

He, however, declined to elaborate when asked whether he had indeed taken the oath that he would divorce his wife with no possibility of reconciliation ( talak tiga ) if he leaves PAS.

"There have been lots written about this already. Let it be. I don’t want to comment further," he said.

The baiah is meant to bar PAS elected representatives from defecting to other parties.

It is understood that PAS in each state have different sets of oaths for elected representatives and only the oaths for Kelantan and Terengganu reps involve divorce.

The only Terengganu elected representative who quit PAS to join Amanah is Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Baharin Shah Raja Ahmad. The other reps are from Selangor, Perak and Kedah.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang (picture) reportedly said those who do not uphold their oaths will face Allah’s wrath.

Hadi reportedly said the oaths are signed before a candidate agrees to stand in a General Election on the PAS ticket.
