Police: Claim by Rumah Api women detainees baseless

Selangor police chief Abdul Samah Mat has said that the claims made against the police by the women detainees from punk entertainment venue Rumah Api are untrue.

One of the women had told Malaysiakini previously that those who were menstruating had been forced to change their sanitary pads in front of female police personnel and that they weren't allowed to wear underwear during their time in the Pandan Indah lockup.

This has been denied by Samah, who said he had called for an investigation into this issue and the results show that they were baseless allegations.

"I am satisfied with the results of the investigations into the actions of the Pandan Indah police, as they were following the standard operating procedure and lock-up rules.

"These negative claims by certain parties on this issue are baseless," he said in a statement released today.

He said their probe revealed that the women detainees who were menstruating were provided sanitary pads by the Pandan Indah police.

They were escorted to a changing room in the lock-up area by a female police officer each time, with the police officer standing guard outside.

"This is for safety and privacy reasons," Samah said.

Allowed to wear underwear

Besides that, the investigation showed that all women detainees were in appropriate lockup clothing, which again was provided according to the lockup rules.

He insisted that the women were all allowed to wear their own underwear.

Yesterday, the inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar ( photo ) had also denied that such incidents took place.

"I have checked, no such thing happened. Surely we would not ask them to change their pads in front of us," he had said.

Last Friday night, there was a police raid at Rumah Api where over 100 people were arrested during a gig titled 'Party Tonight, Revolution Tomorrow'.

They were all detained under Section 143 of the Penal Code, Section (4)(1)(b) of the Sedition Act and Section 6 of the Selangor Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment.

The woman who spoke to Malaysiakini said that they were questioned about the Bersih 4 rally and about toppling the government.

"We just went to see a gig but we were charged with conspiring to topple the government," she said.
