Police re-arrest lawyer, two hours after bail posted

The police re-arrested controversial lawyer Kamal Hisham Jaafar at the Sessions Court premises in Johor Baru yesterday, two hours after he posted bail for two charges of criminal breach of trust.

In confirming this, Johor police chief Rusli Ahmad said the arrest at about 3pm was to facilitate investigations into other cases conducted by the police from the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman and Johor police contingent headquarters.

Police later obtained an order to remand Kamal Hisham for seven days from today.

The order was issued by Magistrate’s Court Senior Assistant Registrar Nabilah Md Ruslan.

Kamal Hisham’s lawyer, GK Sritharan, told Bernama that the remand order was issued to facilitate police investigation into several cases, involving criminal breach of trust and defamation, allegedly committed by his client.

On the charges, Kamal Hisham pleaded not guilty and the court allowed him to post bail of RM300,000 in two sureties while waiting for the case to be re-mentioned on Sept 30.

He is alleged to have committed the two offences between December 2009 and October 2010.

On the first charge, he was accused of cheating Syarikat Met Mint (M) Sdn Bhd of RM515,000 in December 2009 when it wanted to rent a business space in the JB Sentral Building.

On the second charge, he is alleged to have committed a similar offence in October 2010, involving RM18,000 from Point Convenience Shop Sdn Bhd, for the same purpose.

At that time, Kamal Hisham was a director of Southern Ads Sdn Bhd and was entrusted by the board of directors to manage the commercial space in the building.

A fugitive of the Malaysian police since three years ago, he was detained by the Singapore police at 11.15am on Wednesday soon after he entered the country via the Changi International Airport on Tuesday from the Middle East.
