'Special baby chair in cars too expensive'

The Road Safety Department (JKJR) has received many protests against the enforcement on the use of special car seats for babies and children as they are too expensive.

JKJR director-general Abdul Ghafar Yusof said the department had received many protests from the public who said the ruling was a burden to them.

"The government recently made the use of special seats for babies and children compulsory from 2019 for safety reasons which would reduce the rate of injury or death from road accidents," he told reporters after attending a special advocacy programme at the Weighing Station of the Road Transport Department in Valdor in Nibong Tebal today.

Abdul Ghafar said the enforcement would not burden the people but was an added safety measure for babies and children.

He said there were currently special cheap car seats for babies and children but these did not meet the safety standards which had been set.

"To date, there is no proposal to provide a subsidy for special seats and the government could perhaps consider a tax exemption because most of them are imported," he said.
