Notable Court of Appeal judge Hishamudin retires

Justice Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus clocked out from the Palace of Justice today for the last time as a Court of Appeal judge today.

The judge, who will turn 66 years old tomorrow, will begin his mandatory retirement.

Chief Justice Arifin Zakaria and Court of Appeal judges Balia Yusof Wahi, Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, Hamid Sultan Abu Backer, Idrus Harun, Varghese George Varughese and officers and staff of the Court of Appeal and Federal Court bade him farewell after he punched out for the last time.

His parting words were: "I wish the judiciary all the best and keep up with the work in upholding justice."

He said he intended to do some arbitration work after this.

Justice Hishamudin who hails from Johol, Negri Sembilan, was a judge for 24 years from 1994.

He studied at the London School of Political Science, University of London and obtained a degree as a bachelor of law with honours.

He was admitted as barrister-at-law at The Honorable Society of Lincoln's Inn, London in 1973. He then pursued his master of law studies at the renowned London School of Economics in 1978.

He began his career in the legal field when he was appointed to the judicial and legal service as as magistrate in Kuala Lumpur and has held several posts, among others senior assistant registrar and deputy public prosecutor and had held the posts of assistant draftsman at the drafting division unit in the Attorney-General's Chambers and legal adviser for the state of Selangor.

He was appointed as judicial commissioner in 1992 and a High Court judge in 1994 and appointed Court of Appeal judge in April 2009.

Among the landmark Court of Appeal decisions he delivered was the recent transgender case where the court declared invalid the Negri Sembilan state Syariah enactment that criminalises Muslim men for cross-dressing.

Another case was the 2-1 majority Court of Appeal decision declaring unconstitutional Section 15 (5)(a) of the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) 1971 which restricts students from expressing support of, or opposing, any political party.
